La Calera
Radioactive Valle Gran ReyNeighbours in the La Calera area of Valle Gran Rey have been uneasy for some time about the proliferation of telecom aerials and booster towers, sited close to their homes. Now that there is an increasing incidence of minor-and not so minor- related illness in the area, the unease has turned to anger.Luis Fernándo and Nieves are the parents of two primary school age children. Like their neighbours, they now find themselves living in the shadow of twenty one aerials of various shapes and sizes, all clearly visible from their windows.
There is evidence of an increasing incidence of minor-and not so minor- related illness in the area
Valle Gran Rey - 18.05.2008 - There are more they can’t see. All are close enough to emit high levels of radiation at families who formerly counted themselves fortunate to live in the area, known as Juan Rejón, with its fine views of La Calera and La Playa. The neighbours allege that the plethora of aerials affect their healthThe name is curious, given that there is no documented connection with its owner, who was a Spanish general in the conquest of La Palma. Hernán Peraza, his counterpart in La Gomera, was tried for murdering the general, with whom he was obviously seriously disenchanted. Found guilty, he managed-by means of astute politicking-to escape punishment. An early example of what has become a fine old tradition, of some relevance here. The murder supposedly took place in Hermigua, but chroniclers often tweaked the truth. Why should a remote place overlooking the sea bear the name of a famous general? Until the late sixties, this same picturesque vantage point was well known to all the valley’s children. Juan Rejón was where they went to school. Built using stones intended for a small church, the school is now in ruins and the surrounding area is ugly and rubbish-strewn. It is, however, literally humming with high tech equipment, put there over the last few years by companies such as Vodafone, Movistar and Orange to ensure their customers good coverage. Luis Fernándo, for example, is apparently badly affected by radiation supposedly produced by this battery of mobile phone, television and radio equipment. After tests to establish the cause of his general malaise, it was discovered that he had the spectacularly high thyroid count of seven hundred. The specialist treating him asked him if he worked in any kind of nuclear installation, such levels being characteristic of prolonged exposure to radiation. Headaches, insomnia and, inevitably, cancer are reportedly in the neighbourhood and the loud, twenty-four hour humming noise the aerials emit disturbs everyone. A webpage, <http://www.vecinosdelacalera.blogspot.com/>, has been set up. It is, carefully, and shamefully, in these days of “transparency”, anonymous. The recently organised petition demanding an investigation resulted in a call, from the town hall to the telecommunications companies concerned, to present reports. The Minister for Telecommunications was also asked to intercede, and ordered the measurement of radiation levels. Results will be made available to the town hall within fifteen days. Deputy mayor, Ruymán García, assures the town that, “if the results obtained show any anomalies, we will ensure that proper responsibility is assumed.”It is to be hoped that the mystery presence of telecom companies’ employees at the site before the proposed measuring was coincidental. They were clearly observed “fiddling around with the controls,” two days previously, resulting in a noticeable reduction of the humming noise. Unfortunately, nobody thought to photograph the event and measurements were made of the new, presumably reduced, output. Another fascinating aspect of this story is that the area concerned belongs to the town, not to private individuals. Telecommunications companies normally pay between twelve and thirty six thousand euros to site their towers. The neighbours of La Calera may be forgiven for suspecting that-adding insult to injury- pockets have been quietly lined in selling their wellbeing.
